Achebe, Pope of African Literature

The last time I read the unputdownable Things Fall Apart was about three decades ago. Ivo Lysinge as usual sprang a surprise. I was cooling down (u know what I mean) somewhere (a week ago) when he breezed in from Ghana with a copy of Things Fall Apart! Whao ! Together with Manna Gerard (Arantes) we read excerpts of this epitome of penmanship or craft in its sublimest form.

My favorite portion was Achebe’s description of the famous wrestling contest; Amalinze the cat and the Okonkwo’s sprightliness!. Gerard’s was, I think, the slaying of Ikemefuna and Ivo’s was the description of the tragic hero-Okonkwo including an artist’s classic portrayal-rendition on the front cover; as we read on we completely forgot the bottles of beer on the table; there was mirth as we moved from one extract to the next; in fact like Yambo Ouologuem, we laughed and laughed and laughed!!!

We talked literature (acada) and we remembered Soyinka winning the noble prize and the late celebrated Mongo Beti reminding who ever bothered to listen that the Pope of African Literature was Achebe. But we treaded where wiser minds have seemingly not by postulating that Achebe lost out somewhat (noble prize) because he extolled Biafra (Half the Yellow Sun-Chimamanda Ngozi Adochie).

However, we quickly remembered that Achebe embraced the one Nigeria idea when he published Anthills of the Savannah and finally did some soul searching with There was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra. May his noble soul rest in peace
